The use of the smart home has completely revolutionized the way many people go about their lives, all thanks to Google Assistant and that “OK Google” assistant command. Not too long ago, the thought of a house completely hooked up to the internet, with fridges and ovens and heating all being controllable from your phone, was a work of fiction.
These days, however, not only is that reality, but there are way more uses and appliances that you can integrate into your Google Assistant smart home system. One of these applicants that we’re going to talk about today is the Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage system.
Garages, even in the days before smart home technology, we’re always complicated beasts. The complexity of the motor systems, as well as the use of remotes, made the implementation of a smart home garage system only natural.
In particular, the use of Google Assistant with the Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage system is going to make your life a whole lot easier. Having access to your garage alongside everything else on your Google Assistant means that you never have to worry about losing the remote again, and makes operating the garage door more seamless and convenient than ever.
You don’t need to be in the range of your sensors like you would normally need to, and there’s no more messing around trying to get the right angle because the batteries are low. All you need to say is “OK Google,” and your Google Assistant can take care of the rest.
You can even control the lights in your garage through the system on your phone, which is much easier than stumbling around in the door looking for the light switch.
With the MyQ Garage System, never again are you going to have to turn around while on your way to work because you left the garage door open, as you can close your garage door while well on your way down the road.
In this article, we’re going to discuss the use of the system a little more in-depth, as well as give you a step by step guide on how to link Myq to Google Home or Google Assistant.
Is MyQ Compatible With Google Home?
Before we look at how to link MyQ to Google Home, we need to make sure that the two are compatible.
Due to the relatively new nature of consumer smart home products, as well as different big brands competing for the market space, there are plenty of devices out there that don’t work with Google Assistant, but do with other systems.
Thankfully, MyQ, Google Assistant, and Google Home are fully compatible, so there are no issues on that front. As long as you’re Google Home or Google Assistant is updated to the latest firmware and everything has been set up correctly, you should have no issues connecting the two together. All it takes is a five-minute setup, an “OK Google,” and you’re ready to go. The limited-time that it takes to set up this device is very convenient.
Does MyQ Work With Google Assistant
MyQ does work with Google Assistant. In fact, it only works with Google Assistant. Let us explain.
While yes, you can use your MyQ garage door openers through Google Home, it isn’t actually linked to, managed by, or connected to Google Home itself.
Instead, you connect your MyQ account to your Google Assistant account and use the assistant account through Home. This means that MyQ and Google Home are compatible, but not connected to each other. It’s complicated, but it should make more sense now.
Do I Have to Pay to Connect Chamberlain MyQ and Google Assistant
Before we go any further, we need to get this out of the way.
Smart Homes are expensive, especially if you’re investing in a smart garage door system. You have to pay for your Wi-Fi, Your Home account, any smart speakers you’re using, as well as the MyQ Google Assistant garage door system. After shelling out all this cash, it can be annoying to have to pay more, but you do.
To link your MyQ garage door openers to Google Assistant, you need to get a subscription. This is done through the MyQ website. It doesn’t cost much at all, but you need to keep that in mind as you move forward with linking the two together. You can try out the premium subscription for a limited time and always downgrade if you need to budget.
How Does the My IQ Chamberlain Work With Google Home and Google Assistant
Before you start setting up your garage system, you should understand the fundamentals of how everything works. This knowledge can help you troubleshoot if you come across any issues later on down the line, as well as ensures you’re doing things correctly within MyQ and Google Assistant.
Garages can be very dangerous, so understanding your MyQ system is also going to help you prevent any sort of serious injury, as well.
To summarize what your Chamberlain MyQ actually is, it’s a two-way communication system that allows you to monitor and control your garage door and lights from any smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, through the MyQ app or Google Assistant.
The system lets you close the garage door, as well as acts as a garage door opener from wherever you have an internet connection.
When you download the app to your device, you can check if you’ve left your MyQ door open and close the garage door without having to turn back towards your house.
MyQ Works With Google Assistant Wi-Fi
MyQ works off of Wi-Fi connectivity, rather than the Bluetooth option offered by some other smart garage door openers. This is much better than the Bluetooth option. When you’re using the internet, you can monitor and control your garage system from wherever you want. With Bluetooth, you’re limited to a 20-foot radius. This internet connectivity is also what lets it communicate with Google Assistant.
The setup of MyQ is actually pretty simple. The MyQ system that you connect to your garage door is connected to your home internet and paired with the app on your phone. When you select a command on the app, that signal is relayed online to your MyQ through your home network.
By using Google Assistant, you turn these manual inputs into voice commands, allowing you to speak, either to the phone or to your home, and control your garage that way.
How Do I Add MyQ to Google Home
Linking MyQ to Google Home is easy. However, one important bit of information we need to get out of the way deals with connectivity. It only takes a limited time to set up the assistant. One mistake a lot of people make is trying to hook up their MyQ system to Google Home directly. This isn’t possible.
Instead, you need to connect it to Google Assistant, and then control it through Google Assistant using Google Home devices.
While this doesn’t mean too much in practice, you are going to have to use Google Assistant to manage your connection, not google home.
Okay, having said that, let’s get started. First, you need to make sure that you have set up your MyQ system correctly. Once the hardware has been taking care of, you need to head online and jump through some hoops to activate your subscription.
Head to your MyQ services account login and sign in. From there, click on the “add subscription” button. You’re going to be presented with a list of possible partners, click on Google Assistant, and select whether you want monthly or annual billing. Then, enter your billing information and place your order.
Just make sure that you use valid billing information. Otherwise, your service may get cut randomly because you missed bills that you didn’t even know about, which is going to cut the connection between MyQ and Google Assistant.
Once you’ve ensured all of that is working as it should, you can move onto connecting it to your Google Assistant system.
With the subscription out of the way, it’s time to move onto the MyQ phone app and make sure that it is working like it’s supposed to, as well. Once that verification is complete, click on the MyQ menu from the app home screen. In this menu, you should see a button that says “works with MyQ.” Click into that section.
From here, swipe until you find Google Assitant. From here, you have two options. If you don’t have the Google Assistant app, click “get the app.” If you do have Google Assistant, click “launch.”
This is going to bring up your Google Assistant app, which is where we’re going to be doing the rest of the work.
From your Google Assistant home page, select the compass at the bottom right or left-hand corner to bring up the explore bar. Here, you need to type “MyQ” into the bar. You should find the MyQ listing that you need to use. From the MyQ logo, click the “link” button, or on iOS, scroll down to the account linking section of the page and click “link.”
This should bring you to the MyQ garage door authentication page. On this page, enter your MyQ login and password, and click “Authenticate.” If you have an active subscription and everything went as it was supposed to, your Google Assistant is hooked up to your MyQ garage door, and you should be redirected back to the Google Assistant home page.

Is The MyQ Garage Door Opener Compatible with My Garage Door?
Before you even think about getting the money aside to purchase a MyQ garage door opener, you need to make sure that the system is actually compatible with your garage door itself.
As a general rule of thumb, if your garage door was made after 1993, then chances are it works with the garage door opener smart system. That being said, there’s no guarantee unless you check for yourself.
MyQ has a whole host of resources on this topic on the website, so give it a look before you make the investment.
Also, keep in mind that a lot of newer garage door models have MyQ technology already built into the door, so double-check that before you buy, too.
What is the Status of My Garage Door?
The biggest advantage of having a Google Home MyQ link is the fact that you can check the status of your garage door. While you don’t have to link MyQ to Google Home for this to work, it does make things easier, letting you use the “OK Google” command instead of using your phone.
To check the status of your garage door through your MyQ account on the MyQ app, launch it and click on the tile for your garage doors sensor. From this new area, tap “door position.”
You should then get a pop-up telling you whether or not your garage door is open or close. Keep in mind that the app can be wrong, in which case you’re going to have to fix it.
If you’re using your Home Google smart speaker, say, “OK Google, ask MyQ if my garage door is open.” Your speaker should then give you your answer.
Can I Check My Garage Door Openers History
Yes, you can. If you’re curious about the log for when your garage door was opened and closed, you can check that through your MyQ account on the MyQ app, as well.
From the home screen, click on the tile for your garage door sensor. From here, click into “activity.” This pop-up is going to tell you the days, dates, and times that your garage door was opened or closed, and is even going to specify which of the two it was.
What if My MyQ App Tells Me the Garage Door is Open When it’s Closed?
Like we mentioned previously, there are situations that may cause your Chamberlain MyQ app to read the position of the door wrong. Don’t fret over it too much, though, as you can fix it yourself. However, you have to do so without Google Assistant.
When you go through the process of checking whether or not your garage door is opened, the MyQ app is going to ask you if the position it reported is correct. When you click on no, you need to follow these steps:
First and foremost, give the app a few minutes and then check the position again. If the report is still incorrect, then you’re going to have to reset your device.
To do this, remove the garage door sensor from the door. You do this by disconnecting it from the blue clip that’s holding it in place.
You then need to remove the bottom smart module. This is the rectangular box that is below the battery at the bottom of the blue line. Wait about 10 seconds, and replace it. You should hear a confirmation beep from the module.
On the short edge of the module, you should be able to see an LED. If you have done the previous step correctly, that LED is going to blink red for 10 minutes. Wait for the blinking to stop, reattach it to the door, and check the position in the app again.
If that still doesn’t solve the issue, then you’re going to need to reach out and contact MyQ support.
Can I Schedule When My Garage Door Opens and Closes?
How you open and close your garage door on the Chamberlain MyQ app is relatively simple. The option is there in big letters on the home screen, so it’s pretty hard to miss.
That’s if you want to open and close your garage door manually, though. If you want to, you can set up a limited time schedule for your garage door to automatically open and close.
Login to your MyQ account on the app, and open the menu. From the menu, navigate down to schedules. When here, click on the plus sign in the top corner of the screen. This is going to bring up the scheduling menu.
Through this menu, you can select what device you’re monitoring, what you want it to do, and when you want it to do it.
You can set it up to automatically close your garage door after you leave for work, or set it up to open when you arrive home.
The Advantages of Having a MyQ System
Investing in a Chamberlain MyQ system is going to make your life a lot more convenient, especially if you link MyQ with Google Assistant.
Being able to check the position of your door is all well and good, but the true benefit comes when you realize that you can close your garage door through your MyQ account or through your Google Assistant devices.
You get full and remote control of your garage system, which is going to save you time and energy, as well as keeping your house and the valuables inside more secure.
If this sounds like something you need, then set up a MyQ account on the website, and consider ordering in a system.
